Understanding Anxiety

“I don’t understand – it shouldn’t be so hard to control my worries. I just want to function normally and get through the day without my thoughts overwhelming me”

Signs of Anxiety

The symptoms of anxiety can manifest in many different ways, some more obvious than others. Common symptoms of anxiety can include:

Imagine an unexpected storm of intense fear, a surge of discomfort that swells suddenly, often bringing with it physical reactions—this is the reality of panic attacks for some.
Living with anxiety can be a balancing act, with the shadow of worry and irritability always looming – anticipating the worst can become the norm.
Anxiety can wrap you in a persistent cloak of dread, an unsettling feeling of impending doom that overshadows every moment.
With anxiety, a chorus of doubts can run freely in your mind, questioning your worth, abilities, and lead to a self-critical cycle that keeps you from experiencing life fully.
Individuals with high-functioning anxiety tend to overanalyze situations, conversations, and decisions. They may replay interactions in their heads, worrying about how they came across or what they could’ve done differently.
Feeling the need to be continuously busy and work longer hours than peers is another symptom of anxiety. This may stem from a fear of failure or concerns about how others perceive their productivity.
Despite being overachievers, they can also be chronic procrastinators, often due to fear of not being able to complete a task perfectly.
They may have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep due to racing thoughts or worries about the upcoming day.
They often say sorry excessively, even when it’s not needed, due to worries about offending others or being perceived as rude.
A significant change in routines or unexpected situations can cause distress or discomfort.

FAQS

Questions About Anxiety Therapy

While anxiety disorders can be challenging, they are treatable. Therapy may significantly reduce anxiety symptoms and help individuals develop effective coping strategies. With the right support and tools, many people experience significant improvement and can lead fulfilling lives with manageable anxiety levels.

The duration of therapy can vary depending on your comfort level and the severity of your anxiety. Some individuals may start experiencing positive changes in a few weeks, while others may need longer-term support. Consistency, commitment and active participation will help you achieve meaningful progress.

Therapy, especially Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can be highly effective in helping individuals confront and overcome specific fears and phobias. Therapists use evidence-based techniques to desensitize individuals to their fears and build confidence in facing them.

Yes, feeling uncomfortable discussing anxiety or any personal struggles is entirely normal, especially at the beginning of therapy. Trust and rapport between the client and therapist take time to develop. A skilled therapist will create a safe and non-judgmental environment, allowing clients to gradually open up and share their experiences.

Therapy may be valuable for individuals with mild to moderate anxiety as well. Even if anxiety doesn’t severely impact your daily life, therapy can help you develop coping strategies, gain self-awareness, and improve emotional well-being, enhancing your overall quality of life.

In order to help you create lasting change, there will be practical things for you to do in between sessions so you can practice the tools and strategies you learn in therapy.

We offer both in person and virtual sessions, and both work well for anxiety therapy.

It is best to get the first few sessions in together to establish a strong foundation. We usually do these sessions weekly and then determine what is best from there. Of course we can work with each client to establish a schedule that best serves your needs and their resources.
